abstract

introduction: different etiologies of pleural effusion are diagnosed based on serum and plural fluid characteristics. the aim of this study was to assess and compare the serum and pleural fluid protein to lactate dehyrogenase (pr/ldh) ratio in exudative pleural effusions. materials and methods: this study was conducted on 60 patients with exudative pleural effusion including: 20 cases with parapneumonic , 20 cases with tuberculosis (tb), and 20 cases with malignancy. the serum and pleural pr/ldh were measured and compared among 3 groups. result: the mean age of the patients was 55±19sd (years) and male to female ratio was 36/24. there was no statistically significant difference in mean age of the patients among 3 groups (p=0.08). there were statistically significant differences in serum and pleural pr./ldh ratios among groups ( p=0.04 and p= 0.1, respectively). additionally the comparisons of serum and pleural pr./ldh ratios between malignancy and tuberculosis groups were significant ( p=0.02 and p=0.001 , respectively). the serum and pleural pr./ldh ratios were higher in tb group. conclusion: the results of our study showed that serum and pleural pr./ldh ratio can be used in differentiating the etiology of exudative pleural effusion, but needs to be confirmed by larger study.

The Diagnostic Values of Protein to Lactate Dehyrogenase Ratio in Serum and Pleural Fluid in Exudate Pleural Effusions

Introduction: Different etiologies of pleural effusion are diagnosed based on serum and plural fluid characteristics. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the serum and pleural fluid protein to lactate dehyrogenase (Pr/LDH) ratio in exudative pleural effusions. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 60 patients with exudative pleural effusion including: 20 cases with para...

The pleural fluid lactate dehydrogenase/adenosine deaminase ratio differentiates between tuberculous and parapneumonic pleural effusions

BACKGROUND Although pleural fluid lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels are often used to distinguish between tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) and parapneumonic pleural effusion (PPE), this can be challenging as the LDH level may vary from normal to severely increased in PPE and a significantly elevated ADA is frequently measured in both conditions. In this study, w...

The Differential Diagnostic Values of Cytokine Levels in Pleural Effusions

The aim is to examine whether the changes in pleural fluid interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-2, IL-6, and IL-8 levels were significant in differential diagnosis of childhood pleural effusions. IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-6, and IL-8 levels in pleural fluids of all 36 patients were measured. The levels of IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-6, and IL-8 in pleural fluids were statistically significantly higher in the transudate ...

Is albumin gradient or fluid to serum albumin ratio better than the pleural fluid lactate dehydroginase in the diagnostic of separation of pleural effusion?

BACKGROUND To determine the accuracy of serum-effusion albumin gradient (SEAG) and pleural fluid to serum albumin ratio (ALBR) in the diagnostic separation of pleural effusion into transudate and exudate and to compare SEAG and ALBR with pleural fluid LDH (FLDH) the most widely used test. METHODS Data collected from 200 consecutive patients with a known cause of pleural effusion in a United K...

The Diagnostic Value of Pleural Fluid Cytology in Benign and Malignant Pleural Effusions

In developing countries, where investigations and health facilities are inadequate and cost of treatment is unaffordable, cytological examination of body fluids is considered a cheap, rapid, and highly effective tool in identification of the etiology of effusion with prediction of the underlying disease. Cytological examination can detect malignant cells in effusions and sometimes it's superior...
